Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler Open Up About Their MS Journeys
In a heartfelt interview with PEOPLE, Christina Applegate, 52, and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, 42, share how their bond was strengthened by Applegate’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021. As the rain falls outside Applegate’s Hollywood Hills home, the two actresses reflect on their shared experiences and the support they’ve found in each other.
Applegate, who is navigating her first photo shoot in four years, expresses her anxiety about being in the spotlight again. “The last five days I’ve been sobbing… I want to go back to bed and watch Naked and Afraid,” she admits, gripping Sigler’s hand for comfort. Sigler, visiting from Austin, reassures her, reminding her that “a lot is still possible.”
Their friendship blossomed when mutual friend Lance Bass introduced them after Applegate’s diagnosis while filming Dead to Me. For Sigler, who has lived with MS for over two decades, Applegate’s candidness and humor have been liberating. “Even on an ‘up’ day, MS is there. It’s just less sh—y,” Applegate shares, showcasing her resilience.
The two are now collaborating on a podcast titled MeSsy, launching on March 19. The show will feature reflections from their famous friends and delve into the realities of living with MS while tackling various life challenges with humor and honesty.
Sigler praises Applegate for allowing her to discuss the difficult aspects of their condition, stating, “Christina opened me up. I didn’t realize how desperately I needed to stop trying to be perfect.” Applegate echoes this sentiment, emphasizing their deep connection: “She’s the only person who really knows me. I can talk about anything with her.”
Despite the challenges of her diagnosis, including frequent hospitalizations and severe symptoms, Applegate remains hopeful. “I know I’ll live a long enough life… I’ve got to fight,” she insists, leaning on the support of her friend.
Their candid discussion not only highlights their personal journeys but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of friendship and resilience in the face of adversity.
