Anthony Mackie has officially signed on to star in Captain America 4 after his acclaimed transformation in Disney+ series Falcon & the Winter Soldier.

Anthony Mackie has reportedly closed a deal to officially star in Captain America 4. Mackie has been working in the industry since 2002, starring in films like 8 Mile, Million Dollar Baby, and The Hurt Locker. The actor officially made his MCU debut as Sam Wilson in 2014’s Captain America:

The Winter Soldier. Sam found himself caught up in a government conspiracy that revealed S.H.I.E.L.D. was actually run by Hydra and the adventure saw him and the MCU’s original Captain America, Steve Rogers, form a close bond. Sam would go on to become the hero Falcon, assisting Steve in various other missions.

Sam Wilson served primarily as a supporting character until recently, showing up when he was needed but never taking center stage. That all changed with Disney+ and Marvel’s second original streaming series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

After Steve Rogers passes Cap’s shield down to Sam at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the former soldier had a hard time grappling with the idea of a Black man taking on the mantle of Captain America. By the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s run, though, Sam wielded the iconic shield to stop the Flag Smashers attacks. Soon after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended, reports surfaced that a Captain America 4 was officially in development, but Mackie hadn’t been confirmed to star in the film.

Now, Deadline reports that Mackie has closed a deal to star in his first solo MCU feature. Details are under wraps about the film, including its official title. It is also unclear if Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes in the movie after he worked closely with Sam during their Disney+ series. A director has not been set for the film.

Currently, it’s unclear when Captain America 4 could release, but it’s no surprise Mackie has signed on for the film. The actor says he would play Captain American for 20 years if he could and Mackie’s passion for the character of Sam Wilson shows through his layered performances in the MCU.

With the studio already having a packed Phase 4 slate, it seems like Captain America 4 could be a long way off. Still, it’s clear that, even without Steve Rogers, the shield will be as important to the MCU as ever.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman is reportedly penning the script for Captain America 4 along with Dalan Musson, who also wrote for the series. This certainly indicates that Marvel wants to continue fleshing out the timely themes on display in the Disney+ series, but how Captain America 4 will factor into the larger plot of the MCU remains a mystery.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier set up plot threads that could be explored in both the sequel and the larger MCU, so Mackie’s return will be all the more anticipated for what it reveals about Marvel’s future.
